The North Carolina Folk Festival is a multicultural celebration of folk and traditional arts hosted in Greensboro, NC. The Festival presents music, dance, crafts, food, and storytelling traditions from across the country and world, and celebrates and presents the rich tapestry of cultural traditions in North Carolina.
What exactly is folk? From a musical perspective, the Festival will include everything from blues, rockabilly, gospel, klezmer, jazz, bluegrass, cowboy, polka, tamburitza, old-time, and mariachi to western swing, honky-tonk, rhythm and blues, zydeco, and more. Over three days, audiences will have the chance to see hundreds of artists from throughout North Carolina, across the country, and around the world.
The selection of festival participants is guided by the definition of folk and traditional arts established by the National Endowment for the Arts. NEA Definition of “folk and traditional arts”:
The folk and traditional arts are rooted in and reflective of the cultural life of a community. Community members may share a common ethnic heritage, cultural mores, language, religion, occupation, or geographic region. These vital and constantly reinvigorated artistic traditions are shaped by values and standards of excellence that are passed from generation to generation, most often within family and community, through demonstration, conversation, and practice. Genres of artistic activity include, but are not limited to, music, dance, crafts, and oral expression.
How to Submit Your Group for Consideration
If you or your group meet the above definition and are interested in performance opportunities at the North Carolina Folk Festival, please submit your contact, bio and press information in the form below along with links to video and audio samples.
All submissions will receive a preliminary review to assess quality and consistency with the Festival’s mission and values. The high standards of excellence to which the North Carolina Folk Festival adheres, in addition to the limited number of performance spots available from year-to-year, make the selection of performing artists a highly competitive process. Qualified submissions will be brought before a programming committee for further consideration. IMPORTANT: We receive thousands of submissions from artists each year, therefore artists will NOT be contacted unless the Festival is interested in pursuing performance possibilities.
